The first time your kid joins a sport, nobody hands you a gear list. We fix that — for every sport, at every budget.
The first time my child signed up for a sport, I had no idea what I was doing. I searched online and found either vague lists ("get cleats") or retailer pages designed to upsell me into buying things I didn't need. Other parents at practice were helpful but inconsistent — everyone had a different opinion about brands, sizes, and what was actually required vs. nice to have.
That experience is what built this site. My First Sport Kit exists to be the resource I wished existed — written for the parent who is brand new to a sport, not for coaches or competitive athletes. Every guide on this site answers one question: what does my kid actually need to start?
We cover 20 sports with gear guides that explain not just what to buy, but why each item matters, what size to get, what to skip, and what common mistakes first-time parents make. Phase 2 of this project will offer complete ready-to-buy starter kits — everything curated and bundled so you can skip the research entirely.
I'm a parent of [X] kids who have played [sports] over the past [X] years. I built My First Sport Kit because the information gap for first-time sports parents is real and consistent across every sport. Every guide on this site has been personally researched, cross-referenced with coaches and experienced parents, and written specifically for the parent who's doing this for the first time.
Every gear recommendation is based on independent research — not manufacturer relationships or sponsored placements. We research what coaches recommend and what experienced parents actually use.
Every page shows a realistic budget range and clearly distinguishes must-haves from nice-to-haves. We never recommend spending more than a beginner actually needs.
These guides are written for the parent starting from zero — not for competitive players or coaches. If you've been playing for years, our guides may feel basic. That's intentional.
When we link to products, we may earn a small affiliate commission. This never influences which gear we recommend — it helps keep these guides free for all parents.
Every guide on My First Sport Kit is researched using a combination of primary sources (USA national governing bodies, youth league rule books, coaching certifications), cross-referenced with experienced parents and coaches in each sport. We update guides when rules, safety standards, or gear categories change.
